There Came a Voice/She

The last few shows of the semester were dual projects. The first two were individual performances involving a number of interesting technology interactions. Jacob Herold’s “There Came a Voice” was a jazz performance with score for electronics and vivid projections to accompany each section. The musical theme of the piece is very memorable, and use of projections was a crucial visual element.

The second portion of this show was a live dance and video collaboration produced by Esmeralda Kundanis-Grow with video work by Mara Tasker and Nathan Minatta. The show followed a ”Tarantino-style femme fatale” theme and explored the Black Box space in an interesting way. The ceiling grid was used as scenic element and the video was an excellent performance element.

With Jacob on woodwinds, the piece featured Erin Keller on vocals, Andrew Moorhead on piano, Cody St. Ardonld on Synthsizers, Matt Fuller on Guitar, Patrick McDevitt on bass, Josh Priest and Alejandro Castano on percussion, and Maximilian Shiffman operating sound effects and Hunter Ewen operating video. I mixed the show, and Autumn Bjugstad provided top-notch lighting design.

He alone was left,
They sought to take his life.
Prayers were made for death,
He sought to take his life.

But ghosts had sent him forth;
     Walking through the wild Zin,
          Scaling up the Har-El peak,
               Dwelling in a nameless cave.
Ghosts had brought him forth to hear the word.

A violent wind swept across the wilderness...
…but the word was not in the wind.

A great earthquake tore into the mountain…
…. But the word was not in the earthquake.

A consuming fire pressed upon the cave…
…but the word was not in the fire.

Gentle stillness filled the air,
Behold, there came a voice!
